Kathmandu Valley hosts seven UNESCO world heritage sites, all of which are active shrines and temples. Today we will have a full day guided tour introducing the most fascinating and famous places like Swayambunath, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Durbar Square.
The flight to Lhasa takes us directly over the biggest mountains in the world, from the airplane window you’ll have a good view on Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu and Shishapangma, all over over 8000 meters. Land in Lhasa the afternoon, rest and adjust to the altitude.
The great monastery of Drepung lies on the side of Lhasa valley and offers amazing shrines, great architecture and views over the city. In the afternoon, it is time to follow one of the most famous scenes in Tibet as the monks of Sera monastery showcase their debate of Buddhist studies.
The absolute landmark of Lhasa and whole Tibet, the Potala hosts thrones and shrines of the Dalai Lamas making it one of the greatest sights on the planet. Still it is the Jokhang surrounded by the Barkhor Square that makes Lhasa the holiest place for Tibetan Buddhism. Following pilgrims to the holy shrines would be a definite highlight of any tour.
Free day to enjoy Lhasa, follow colourful pilgrims on the Koras, the holy walks around the temples or just relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Lhasa offers great shopping, cozy restaurants and exciting life to be easily encountered wondering through the alleys of the old town. Don’t miss Potala in the night-lights.
After adjusting to the Tibetan heights in the comfort of the capital, it is time to head out of the city. After the first small pass, there is already one of the best lookouts down to the turquoise blue Scorpion lake, Jamdrok Tso. A full day of driving takes us to Gyantse, a town with majestic old fortresses and one of the most authentic old towns.
Tibet's second largest city is getting developed but still has character. The great monastery complex of Tashilumpo, once led by the Pantsen Lama gathers pilgrims around Tibet. The old town with its narrow alleys, markets and a massive fortress is great for wandering around during the afternoon.
We will drive back Lhasa today.
