Transcendent and magical, Mongolia is where the time goes by in a different pace and where the extraordinary people and their traditions give a completely new meaning “living off the land”.
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, meet at airport or railway station. Tour briefing in the evening.
We load the vehicle and head out from Ulaanbaatar south on the tarmac road towards the Gobi. Mid day arrival to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a dramatic landscape of rock formations. After a late lunch at camp, we will explore it on foot.
We continue the drive via Mandalgobi town until South Gobi, the least populated province in Mongolia, which is the least populated country on earth.
A full day of exploring the core of Gurvansaikhan Mountains and the gorge of Yol along with the majestic wildlife of the region. It is possible to hike the entire length of this ravine, which is snow and ice covered and with ice well into the summer. Return to the ger camp for the night.
We will drive west, some 200 km to the famous Hongor Sands, a giant sand dune stretching 180 km to the distance. Sometimes it is just a couple of hundred meters wide, sometimes as wide as 7-20 km. We will check in at a ger camp next to this giant sand dune. It is high and has a small stream following the leeward side of the sand dune. Herds- men also live nearby the sand dune. Spend a free afternoon on the dunes and enjoy the sunset.
In the morning drive east 120 km to the famous Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs. This place was named by Roy Chapman Andrews, whose expedition found first ever fossilized dinosaur eggs in the 1920s.
After breakfast drive full a day north to the Ongiin River, which usually is dried out. The Ongiin Monastery ruin is alongside the river near Saikhan Ovoo. Hike around the area in the afternoon. Spend overnight at a camp.
Depart in the morning for a full day drive through steppe landscape to the southernmost Bulgan province and the scenic Högnö Khan Mountain area.
The Högnö Khan Mountain is a giant rock formation in the middle of the steppe and in it is the small Erdenekhombo Monastery, now being restored. It was destroyed during the purges of the 1930s. An interesting countryside area where many nomadic herdsmen live surrounds it. We will explore the area on foot today. As easy hike until Övgön Monastery ruin, located in a green oasis in the middle of Högnö Khan Mountains.
After breakfast, we will drive 80 km to the nearby town of Harhorin (Karakorum) for a full day excursion and visit the Erdenezuu monastery. It had some 100 temples within its 400 by 400 meters long walls. Erdenezuu is still one of the fascinating sites of Mongolia.
